Antique Diamond, Ruby & Emerald Dragonfly Crescent Pendant
An extraordinary 19th-century French brooch converted into a pendant, depicting a dragonfly resting upon a crescent moon. The crescent is encrusted with rose-cut diamonds, echoed in one pair of the dragonfly’s wings, while the other pair shimmers with emeralds in varying shades of green. The dragonfly’s body is formed from a luminous pearl and a row of graduated rubies, with ruby cabochon eyes and a tiny diamond set to the forehead. The diamonds are set into silver to heighten their brilliance, while the coloured gemstones are mounted in rich 18ct gold. The reverse and jump ring are also 18ct gold, and the sculptural curve of the dragonfly’s body, combined with the domed crescent, gives the piece wonderful depth and movement.
Dragonflies have long symbolised transformation, light, and fleeting beauty, often associated with change and the soul. The crescent moon traditionally represents cycles, femininity, intuition, and renewal. Together, the pairing suggests a poetic union of metamorphosis and eternal rhythm, themes deeply embedded in 19th-century symbolism.
The craftsmanship required to create a piece of this intricacy cannot be overstated. It has been meticulously executed to the highest standard and retains a remarkable presence. A rare and highly romantic jewel with true sculptural elegance.
