French 18ct Gold Cherub Pendant
A charming French cherub pendant crafted in 18ct gold, formed with a hollow construction typical of early 20th-century French devotional jewellery. The cherub is inspired by Raphael’s angels, long associated with innocence, guardianship, and divine protection. Cherub motifs were worn as talismans, believed to watch over the wearer and offer comfort and safety.
The pendant is engraved with the date ‘26 September 1920’ and initialled ‘M.E’, adding a personal and intimate layer of history. Small bells hang below, a traditional detail symbolising protection and the warding off of harm. The reverse shows minor dents and imperfections, commensurate with age and the hollow construction, and part of the piece’s honest antique character. It bears the French eagle mark confirming 18ct gold.
