An elegant Victorian objet de vertu medal by Louis Alexandre Bottée, dated 1899, is formed in silver-plated bronze and rich in French republican symbolism. The obverse depicts Marianne, the personification of the French Republic, shown in military dress and wearing a helmet surmounted by the Coq Gaulois (Gallic Rooster), a symbol that rose to prominence during the French Revolution. A rising sun appears to the right, with ‘FRANCE’ along the edge and Bottée’s name incised below.

The reverse, designed by sculptor and engraver Adolphe Rivet (1855–1925), shows a winged female figure draped in a transparent veil, holding a wreath in her left hand and an olive branch in her right, arranged around a central plain circle. The imagery reflects themes of peace and victory. A beautifully modelled and historically significant piece, preserved in excellent antique condition.
