Late Victorian Carved Opal Pansy Charm with Diamond in 14ct Yellow Gold
This wonderful Victorian pansy charm is carved from a single piece of opal, a remarkable feat of craftsmanship, as opal is incredibly difficult and risky to carve and breaks so easily. At the centre sits a tiny, sparkly diamond, silver set. We have converted the piece from a bar brooch, using the original pin to make a matching bale and jump ring, all in 14ct yellow gold. Due to its age and the delicate nature of the stone, there are visible splits to the front of the opal, though everything remains secure as it is a solid piece of opal. It is the rarest of pieces despite not being in perfect condition.
The name "pansy" derives from the French "pensée", meaning thought, and in Victorian symbolism the pansy came to mean "think of me". Pensée à moi was a heartfelt sentiment, making pansy jewellery a popular choice for tokens of love and remembrance. A carved opal example such as this is a truly special find for collectors of antique and sentimental jewellery.
