Georgian Hairwork Mourning Bracelet Commemorating Elizabeth Margaret Grey
This absolutely incredible Georgian mourning bracelet commemorates Elizabeth Margaret Grey, the 17-year-old niece of Prime Minister Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, whose ministry abolished slavery within the British Empire and after whom Earl Grey tea takes its name. The bracelet itself, along with the central locket compartment, is intricately woven from Elizabeth’s hair, interspersed with delicate gold detailing and a safety chain. A finely modelled snake motif winds through the design, symbolising love and immortality.
Likely commissioned by her mother following her death, the bracelet remains an extraordinarily moving example of Georgian mourning jewellery. Hairwork pieces of this calibre were deeply personal objects, intended to preserve a tangible connection to a loved one while expressing grief, devotion, and remembrance through symbolic design. The survival of such a fragile and intimate piece in remarkable condition over two centuries later is truly exceptional, making it an important collector’s piece as well as a poignant historical object.
